What is the difference between indoor and outdoor Christmas lights?
Outdoor lights carry an IP rating that seals the lamp holders and joins against water. Indoor lights have no such seal and will fail outside.
The rating is the whole difference. An indoor set hung on a hedge may work for a fortnight and then trip the circuit once water reaches a lamp holder. If a set has no IP number printed on the box or the plug label, treat it as indoor only. Anything going on a wall, a fence, a hedge or a garden tree needs an outdoor rating, and any connection made outdoors needs a weatherproof enclosure.

How do you put lights on a Christmas tree?
Plug the set in to check it works, then start at the base nearest the socket and work upwards, winding the string along each branch from the trunk to the tip.
Starting at the bottom keeps the plug end beside the socket, so no lead trails up through the tree. Winding in and out along the main branches, rather than circling the outside, gives the tree depth instead of a single ring of light. If one set does not cover the tree, join a second on the coupler, up to the maximum stated on the product, rather than plugging it into another extension lead. Switch the lights off at night and when the house is empty, or put them on a plug in timer.
